At STEMpowered, we aim to foster the natural scientific and mathematical curiosity of young girls in Detroit. Women are unequally represented in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) fields and we know this is not due to unequal abilities. Our campers, and all girls, deserve encouragement, opportunity and the empowering belief that their potential has no limit.
During the summer we host day camps for bright young women from Detroit Public Schools and provide a community of support for our campers throughout the school year. During our weeklong sessions, campers have the opportunity to explore their own interests in an interactive and exciting environment. Daily activities include local field trips, demonstrations, guest speakers that highlight the wide range of women and careers in STEM fields, plus crafts, games and summer camp fun. During the week, students have the opportunity to conduct their own experiments with the guidance of a personal mentor and present their findings on the final day of camp.
All camper tuition is 100% covered by scholarships from local businesses and private donations, plus transportation and food are provided for all campers.
We are committed to being long term mentors for STEMpowered alum and look forward to welcoming back our campers for our third year in 2016, plus adding some new faces!
